Chapter 15
My black eye in the morning is grotesque. I wish I would have iced it before I went to sleep. Stella looks at me like she has no idea how to fix it and I tell her not to worryâthere is no fixing it. I guess it will match my dress for tonight.
I head to lunch, and nobody will look at me. I wonder if they are upset we got caught last night. I try to apologize and explain I honestly expected he would be out for two days, but they donât seem to care about that. I finally decide to get some hints as to what is going on. I hear them all thinking they canât believe the prince would do this to me. I find Kelly and ask her why everyone is assuming the prince did this to me.
âWe were all getting in trouble and Ellie asked why you werenât being punished. Prince Cassius told her not to worry about it, that he would see to it personally that you would be disciplined as well.â I laugh at the absurdity of it. I like it so much I decide to let them believe it.
âOh, so he implicated himself?â I ask her, playing along without confirming or denying anything.
âYeah, I canât believe he beat you. That is way worse than scrubbing every inch of the tower. Thatâs what we had to do. I guess it doesnât pay to be the Princeâs Pet.â
âI have been trying to tell you this all along.â I say it hoping she will pass along the message. Maybe this will stop the comments.
The rest of the day, Stella tries icing my eye to get the swelling down. She tries creams, ointments, homemade concoctions, and anything else she can think of. When itâs time to get ready for the ball, the swelling has gone down but the bruise is still pronounced. Stella does her best to cover it up, but it doesnât work. In the end, she decides to give me dark eye makeup to try to disguise it.
My black dress is gorgeous like all the dresses Joel has designed for me. Itâs long sleeved, with a sheer neckline and beaded bodice on top and a giant tulle skirt. There is scarcely enough solid fabric on the back to disguise the tattoo. I must remember to mention to Joel that my dresses need to cover my back until further notice. My hair is pulled back with curls flowing down the back of the dress.
Just after dark, thereâs a knock at my door. Stella answers it and I hear her say, âHello, Your Highness.â
I look up and see Cassius. I almost fall off my chair when I observe he is wearing a white shirt with his tux. Surprising since tonightâs theme is his favorite color, black. He looks so delectable I must bridle my hormones before I can talk to him.
âHave a splendid evening,â Stella says as she slips out the door, closing it behind her. I am alone with Cassius, and he looks too good.
